Tool and Die Technician
Designs and develops prototype and production tooling for metal stampings in the automotive industry on CAD based design systems per customer specification by performing the following duties.
Duties and requirements of the job:
Designs and details a broad range of tools including progressive dies, transfer dies, forming tools and cutting tools.
Designs jigs, dies, and fixtures for production or experimental use.
Develops strip layouts for progressive dies calculating material usage, operation lineup and press tonnage.
Studies specifications and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and costs of tools.
Applies mathematical formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration.
Must understand and be responsible for critical design criteria, such as fits, location and multistage timing.
Selects standard items for incorporation into tool design.
Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layout and detail drawings.
Modifies tool designs according to trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance.
Calculate tolerance stack ups and verify part tolerances.
Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to detail prints and manufacturing processes.
Skills Required to Perform the Duties of the Job:
Computer aided design experience in progressive and transfer tooling for metal stampings and machining.
3-D solid modeling and GDT design experience.
